Alien hives have taken root across rural Appalachia, offering desperate people a fresh start in exchange for loyalty and corpses. Gory sci-fi horror about identity and transformation.

Our take

Worm-cult body horror with a broken, beating heart

Crane is an autistic trans man in a near-future Appalachia where worm hives offer the lost a place to belong, at a price. Then he finds out he's pregnant, and everyone around him, human and otherwise, decides his body belongs to the hive. Critics gave it starred reviews for pairing truly stomach-turning gore with a tender, furious story about bodily autonomy, and readers keep singling out the messy pull between Crane and his abusive ex and an ending that goes all the way. We picked this one for horror readers who want an idea behind the splatter. Fair warning: this is the most extreme book on our list.

Who it's for: Adult horror readers with strong stomachs who like body horror that's about something real.

If you liked: Stephen Graham Jones, Eric LaRocca, Andrew Joseph White's Hell Followed with Us

Heads-up: Read the author's content warnings first: forced pregnancy, abuse, graphic gore, home abortion and birth. It's horror more than sci-fi.
