A grieving girl in the frozen north learns she is royal, promised to a commander, and dangerously drawn to the man training her for war.
Our take
Icy northern romantasy built on pure, aching yearning
Ary Gold is grieving alone in a frozen northern wilderness when strangers arrive insisting she carries royal blood and a destiny against a rising shadow mage, plus a betrothal she never agreed to. The man assigned to train her is cold, dangerous and very much not her fiancé. Tens of thousands of readers have rated this debut, and the slow-burn longing is what they rave about most, along with an ending that leaves them reeling. The first half is a slow, travel-heavy journey and the magic stays vague, but we'd hand this to anyone who wants romantasy tension over heat.
